CISA's no-cost resources are a sensible place to look before adding another subscription. Start with a specific security gap and someone who can act on the findings. A free tool still needs time, access, maintenance, and a response process.
The CISA directory includes CISA services and external resources. CISA explicitly says inclusion is not endorsement of a commercial product and does not establish suitability for your use case.
Choose the problem before the tool
Write a concrete objective such as "identify unknown internet-facing systems" or "find accounts that remain active after departure." These lead to different forms of work.
| Need | A useful next action | Owner needed |
|---|---|---|
| Understand external exposure | Review scanning options and authorized scope | Infrastructure or security owner |
| Prioritize basic controls | Use CISA's linked performance-goal resources to identify gaps | Person accountable for the security plan |
| Remove stale access | Reconcile personnel records with accounts and application owners | HR, IT, and system owners |
| Respond to findings | Define urgency, assignment, and confirmation of correction | Someone able to make the change |
These are proposed planning steps, not a claim the directory supplies a complete solution for every row.
Confirm scanning eligibility and authorization
CISA Cyber Hygiene Services documents vulnerability scanning and web application scanning, with enrollment information for eligible U.S. government and critical infrastructure organizations. Check eligibility directly; do not assume every business or international organization can enroll.
Before any scan, settle asset ownership and permission. A hosted service may have rules about scanning. Define approved addresses or applications and who receives the results.
Decide what happens after a finding arrives
For a hypothetical small IT team, start with one authorized service and a weekly review. Assign each finding to an owner, record whether it is applicable, and verify the correction. Escalate urgent findings through a process that does not wait for the next meeting.
Track unresolved findings and their age. Avoid celebrating the number of reports generated when nobody has the authority or time to fix the systems.
Keep identity work alongside exposure management
An internet scan will not by itself tell you whether a former contractor retains access to an internal application. Inventory account owners, privileged access, recovery processes, and departure handling separately.
If manual account work is the gap, evaluate NIM and other identity tools against a defined workflow. This is a separate commercial evaluation; the CISA directory is not evidence that CISA endorses NIM or a competing product.
A useful first-month deliverable is modest: one documented gap, one chosen resource, one accountable owner, and evidence that at least one applicable finding reached a verified correction. Expand the program when the team can sustain that process.
